Phantasma - ghost in Spanish!

The Phantasma - ghost in Spanish!
Submitted by Jerry: jrose@commlinks.com

The Phantasms - Okay this one didn't happen to me. But, I know the people involved and they are dead serious about what occurred. A guy I know named Bob buys old homes and fixes them up for resale.

That's what he does for a living. He bought an older home in south Phoenix that had been vacant for a long time. It needed serious work, but the real estate market was/is very strong so he figured it was still a good investment.

After closing he sent one of his regular work crews over to do repairs. After the first day or so, the guys started complaining that someone -- either Bob or one of the neighbours -- was trying to scare them.

They said when they were in the house, they could hear footsteps going up and down the stairs and walking through the rooms above. But, when they went to investigate, no one would be there.

Anyway, after another few days passed, all of them quit. They told Bob they wouldn't go back in the house, no matter what. So Bob called another work crew to go to the house.
The head guy was someone Bob had known for years. Bob told him to go to the house one morning before his crew was to start, look it over and then he (Bob) would meet the guy there a little later so the two could discuss a the work to be done and the price to be paid.

Bob also told him that since it was empty, he'd leave the house open so the guy could get inside. Well on the agreed upon morning, the worker came to see Bob at his office. The worker told Bob that he was at the house but the "guy you're renting it to won't let me in to inspect it." Bob said, "I'm not renting it to anyone.

You must be at the wrong house." He gave the guy the address again, and the guy went back to check it out. It was the right house. He called Bob from his mobile phone and said "Look, I got the right house. There's a guy in there, and he's locked all the doors and won't let me in.

You better call the cops." Instead, Bob told him to wait out front, and he would be right over. Bob's office was just down the street. When Bob got to the house, the worker told him that when he arrived, he went around back where the door was supposed to be unlocked.

He said he found it locked. So he started looking for another door, and that's when he noticed a guy standing in the living room watching him through the window. He said he waved at the guy and tried to explain who he was and what he was doing.

He also asked the guy to come unlock the door. He said the guy wouldn't move he just stood there with a "silly looking grin on his face." The worker said the guy looked Hispanic, so he thought maybe he didn't understand English, and he tried speaking to him in Spanish.

When he did this the guy just turned and walked up the stairs. That's when the worker said he first went to Bob's office. When he got back, he said he didn't see the guy anymore and all the doors were locked. So after calling Bob, he tried knocking on the doors and windows but couldn't get the guy to answer.

After hearing this, Bob walked over to the house from the street and found the front door unlocked. The worker freaked out. Some high school girls from the neighbourhood saw the two guys talking about what was going on and came over. They said "You guys trying to sell this house." Bob told 'em he was.

One of the girls said, "You're never going to sell it." Bob asked her why she said that. She said "Everyone's seen him in there." Bob said "Seen who?" She said "The phantasms." ("ghost" in Spanish). Apparently, sometime before Bob purchased the house, before it was left vacant, a guy broke into the house and he and the son of the family living there got into a fight on the steps.

One of them was killed. I don't know if it was the intruder or the son. But, all of the neighbourhood knows the house is haunted, and it has become a rite of passage to actually look in the window and see the phantasms.

Funny thing is, Bob never could sell the house. He eventually took it off the market and rented it to a large Mexican family. I saw him two weeks ago at a birthday party and asked him if his "spook house" was still haunted. He said he asked the family about it a while back.

They said they hear the ghost on the steps all the time, but that he usually doesn't bother them. He said they told him the ghost only comes out where you can see him when you're alone in the house, and it scares the kids sometimes, but that's about it. Like I said, I haven't been there, and I don't want to go. But, I believe Bob.
